Best Photo Spots from the Toronto Ferry

Whether you are a professional photographer or just looking for the perfect Instagram shot, the journey to the Toronto Islands offers some of the most spectacular views in the city.

The Classic Skyline Shot

Where: The aft (back) deck of the ferry. When: Departing from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal towards Centre Island. Why: As the ferry pulls away from the docks, the city skyline opens up behind you. You get a perfect, unobstructed view of the CN Tower, the Rogers Centre, and the dense cluster of downtown skyscrapers reflecting on the water.

The Sunset Silhouette

Where: Hanlan's Point ferry. When: The late afternoon/evening ferry returning to the city. Why: The ferry to and from Hanlan's Point takes a slightly more western route. If you catch the ferry back during golden hour or sunset, you can capture the sun dipping behind the city or the sky turning vibrant shades of pink and orange behind the skyline.

The Waterfront Promenade

Where: Arriving at the terminal from the islands. When: Anytime during the day. Why: As you approach the city, you get a beautiful wide shot of the revitalized waterfront, including Harbourfront Centre, the Queens Quay terminal, and the various sailboats moving through the inner harbor.

The Island Arrival

Where: The bow (front) deck of the ferry. When: Approaching Ward's Island. Why: The approach to Ward's Island is green, lush, and serene. Capturing the contrast between the approaching natural landscape and the wake of the ferry creates a beautiful narrative shot of escaping the city.

Photography Tips

  • Wind and Water: It gets windy on the upper decks. Keep a firm grip on your camera or phone.
  • Timing: For the best lighting, aim for the "golden hours"—shortly after sunrise or just before sunset.
  • Winter Magic: Don't discount winter photography! The islands are quiet, and capturing the skyline behind chunks of harbor ice or a frozen lagoon is truly dramatic.
